2 Back to School Shopping Portal Offers – Up to 5,000 bonus points available!

We all online shop. A lot. It’s a fact of living in the 21st century, so you might as well get more than just your purchases! As I’ve said before, shopping portals are a great way to earn extra miles on the things you already buy online. From that previous post:

Shopping portals are a great way to earn extra points on things you’re already buying online, and most rewards programs have some sort of portal. If you have a rewards account, the chances are they also have a shopping portal.

Normally when you go to buy something online, you go directly to that website, pay for what you want, and earn miles at the base rate (the points you earn just by using your credit card). Shopping portals act like a sort of middle man, rewarding you with extra points for using them as an intermediary.

Right now, we’re seeing two “back to school” shopping portal offers, one from United and one from American. If you’re planning on making some big purchases (or many just many small ones!), these promotions should be a great way to rack up even more points!

United MileagePlus

Between 7/21-8/18, you can earn up to 3,000 bonus points by shopping through the MileagePlus Shopping Portal. It’s a tiered promotion, meaning you’ll earn more points as you spend more money:

  • Spend $150, earn 500 bonus points
  • Spend $350, earn 1,500 bonus points
  • Spend $600, earn 3,000 bonus points

Right now (as of 7/23), you can earn 10 points per dollar on purchases made at Nike, so if you were to maximize this promotion, you’d earn the following:

  • 6,000 points from shopping through the portal at Nike (10 points per dollar x $600)
  • 3,000 bonus points
  • 600+ points from credit card spend (depends on the card you use)

All in, you could potentially earn 9,600+ points from this United promotion!

American AAdvantage

Between 7/23-8/18, you can earn up to 2,000 bonus points by shopping through the American AAdvantage eShopping Portal. It’s also a tiered promotion, meaning:

  • Spend $150, earn 500 bonus points
  • Spend $300, earn 1,000 bonus points
  • Spend $500, earn 2,000 bonus points

Right now (as of 7/23), you can earn 6 points per dollar on purchases made at Under Armour, so if you were to maximize this promotion, you’d earn the following:

  • 3,000 points from shopping through the portal at Nike (6 points per dollar x $500)
  • 2,000 bonus points
  • 500+ points from credit card spend (depends on the card you use)

All in, you could potentially earn 5,500+ points from the American promotion. While not as good as the United promotion, 5,500 AAdvantage miles is nothing scoff at — when Nick and I went to Hawai’i last year, our oneway ticket from Honolulu to Kona cost us 4,500 AAdvantage miles each — the promotion could net you a “free” flight!

Conclusion

Portals are a great way to boost your points count and a great way to keep your points from expiring. So far this year, I’ve earned 670 Amtrak points from online purchases made through portals. You’re going to online shop–might as well not leave points on the table!

NOTE:  you must register for each shopping portal individually and you must do so before you start shopping through it.
